The gladiator sandal is considered to be one of the oldest shoe versions and was not only worn in ancient Rome by the arena fighters of the same name, the gladiators, but by the entire population. Men as well as women and children wore these sophisticated sandal variantthen known as calceus, consisting of a simple sole and leather straps wrapped around the foot and lower leg.
